www3..... what is it?

Ive seen on some sites that their URL is something like:

www3.WHATEVER.com

What is the number 3 for and how does it get there? Is it some sort of special registration or is it host related?

Ive seen that a few times, would be good if someone could explain how it gets there.

i always thot that it was just a subdomain created by the administrator of the domain - as good as www or www4...

like daboss said. If you look at your files where public_html and other directories are you will see a www folder
