what are you making these designs in? perhaps you should use less graphics with your designs. try to make the content, navigation and header areas more clear. make it as user friendly as possible :)

ye they need to be a bit toned down. you wanna attract visitors and make them into a calm, happy state of mind - not scare them and make them freaked out with bright colours.
